Atsuko Maeda's quote with tears upon 2011 AKB Annual Election has become famous, however, Akiko Wada who saw the video could not get it.
During the Third Annual AKB48 Election, Yuko Oshima who was ranked down from the first to the second place thanked her fans saying "You votes are your love for us". This indicates her intention for those who criticize the system of the election which one person can buy many CDs and give multiple votes.
On June 12, 'Akko ni Omakase' introduced some scenes from the election which was held in Nihon Budokan (June 6). When Yuko Oshima's name was announced as the second, Atsuko Maeda who was ranked in the first broke down in tears on her chair. She was utterly speechless once she went on stage. After a while, she gave a teary speech. "Some of you may hate me, but please do not hate AKB because of me." The next moment, there was a huge cheer and applause from the audience. This is the famous 'Atsuko Maeda's Quote' at the election.
Akiko Wada seemed puzzled when she saw the scene. During Maeda's speech, Wada kept asking "What does it mean?". When she saw Yasushi Akimoto wiping his tears during Maeda's speech, Wada just could not believe it.
She thought for a while and assured, "So I don't really get it but there are people who don't like Maeda?". She then asked Akina Minami, "Do you say stuff like this?" as she was still not convinced. Akina responded, "She was very courageous to say this. I was moved," and Wada said, "I didn't know that girls think like that...". Then she was again skeptical about Akimoto's tear and said, "Was that really tears? Not sweats?". In regards to Maeda's comment, Wada could not get it until the end although she showed efforts to understand it; "I am surprised that she actually said it... that is so weird..."
